Supply Age Dominance
Distribution of tracked supply across six age bands, from coins younger than 3 months to coins unmoved for more than 5 years. Shares are normalized by the sum of available bands, totaling 100%, rather than by total supply. The youngest group starts at one hour. The chart describes an age-based stock, not daily spending.
What is it?
This reading decomposes Bitcoin's circulating supply tracked across six age bands: under 3 months, 3-6 months, 6 months-1 year, 1-2 years, 2-5 years and over 5 years. Supply series are aggregated then divided by the sum of available bands. Coins younger than one hour are not included. The normalized stack totals 100% of tracked bands without measuring revived supply.
How to read
Read relative band shares from youngest to oldest. Widening indicates an increased share of the tracked total, not necessarily an absolute BTC increase. Age describes time since the last movement; it identifies neither holders nor their intentions.
Key zones
Each band is an inactivity duration, not a buying or selling zone. A larger share of older bands describes older tracked supply. A larger share of younger bands describes more recently moved tracked supply. No threshold alone demonstrates a cycle phase.
What to observe
Observe migration between bands as coins age and simultaneous changes in their shares. Spending can reset coin age, but an internal transfer is not necessarily a sale. Compare with spending measures to distinguish stocks from activity.
Historical context
Age bands extend the public HODL Waves approach. They allow comparison of supply structure across periods. The calculation does not classify observations as tops or lows or prove that a change results from ETFs or a particular investor category.
Expert notes
The denominator is the sum of available bands. A missing series can therefore change the relative shares of other bands; a 100% total does not guarantee complete supply coverage. The under-3-month group aggregates sub-bands starting at one hour. Age can also include lost coins without identifying them.
Common mistakes to avoid
An old coin is neither proof of conviction nor an identified lost coin. A young coin is not proof of a sale. Shares are relative to the tracked band total, not an exact measure of all supply or a holder count.
