Bitcoin Merchant Adoption

Number of known physical merchants worldwide accepting Bitcoin payments, sourced from BTCMap.org (OpenStreetMap data, ODbL license). Tracks real-world commerce adoption - a fundamental indicator decoupled from on-chain speculation and protocol activity.

What is it?

Bitcoin Merchant Adoption tracks businesses documented as accepting Bitcoin in BTCMap.org, using community OpenStreetMap data under the ODbL licence. The history cumulates retained records by their created_at date. That date describes registration in the source; it does not establish the first Bitcoin payment date or when acceptance began.

How to read

The curve shows a cumulative count of retained records ordered by their creation date in the source. A steeper slope means more records were created during the period. The BTC price overlay allows visual comparison of changes without demonstrating a causal link.

Key zones

Four adoption tiers are drawn as dashed reference lines on the merchant-count axis: below 10 000 is the pioneer phase; 10 000 to 20 000 is accelerated growth; 20 000 to 50 000 is the early-mainstream tier; above 50 000 is the highest tier retained here, where Bitcoin is plainly present across the merchant space; the tier describes a snapshot of the merchant count and asserts no irreversibility. Slope still matters on top of the tiers: sustained acceleration (rising slope) after a boundary crossing describes faster growth in record counts; a plateau inside a tier describes few new records within the documented scope. Milestone catalysts (payment-processor integrations, sovereign adoptions) are not labeled with annotated vertical markers - identifying them precisely requires cross-referencing external event calendars.

What to observe

Watch the slope and changes in documented record counts. Acceleration may reflect added businesses or increased documentation activity; a plateau means few new records within the retained scope. The count measures neither payment numbers nor payment amounts or customer visits.

Historical context

This series is reconstructed from the creation dates of records retained in the community source. Adding, correcting or removing a record can change the reconstructed history. It describes documented coverage and is not an exhaustive global census of Bitcoin acceptance or usage.

Expert notes

LIMITATIONS: BTCMap is a community source with varying coverage. Records do not prove recent payment activity. Closures or discontinued acceptance may be documented late. The created_at date is a record date, not a verified adoption date. Source: BTCMap.org, OpenStreetMap data under the ODbL licence, attribution required.

Common mistakes to avoid

A listed business does not necessarily receive Bitcoin payments regularly. A count increase may come from improved community coverage. Without transaction or customer-visit data, changes in this curve cannot be attributed to growing user demand.
