Tech Adoption Wave (Google Trends)
Stacked area of tech-concept search indices: four concepts out of five tracked, selected by sum of indices over the processed history. Each band is that term's 0-100 index, normalized on its own maximum. Its thickness is the index at that date; the total is a sum of indices. Neither the ranking nor the bands measure absolute search volumes or shares of a common market.
What is it?
Stacked indices from a five-term basket (blockchain / smart contract / defi / nft / web3). The producer selects four terms by sum of indices over the processed history, before filtering the displayed window. Each band is that term's 0-100 index, normalized on its own maximum: equal thickness does not imply equal search volume. The selection can change when the processed history changes, independently of the window displayed.
How to read
The thickness of a band is its term's normalized index at that date. The thickest band at one date need not lead the aggregate ranking, which sums indices across the processed history. The total height is the sum of the four displayed indices. Absolute volumes of searches are not measured here: neither thickness nor aggregate ranking compares those volumes between terms.
Key zones
Each term has its own peak history. A missing band means its sum of normalized indices falls outside the four retained over the processed history. It does not establish that the technology is abandoned or that its absolute search volume is lower.
What to observe
Observe whether each term's normalized index rises or falls, and whether several rise together. The term with the lowest sum of indices over the processed history is omitted. To follow a particular concept directly, see the Modern Retail Basket, which covers post-2020 vocabulary.
Historical context
Compare the dates and sizes of earlier and recent peaks within each term’s own series. The normalized indices do not establish which term had the largest absolute search volume in an earlier period. The four retained terms can change as the processed history expands.
Expert notes
A term can have several peaks, separated by rising, falling or relatively flat observations. The total height of the basket is the sum of the four indices; it is not a measure of total search volume. Capital flows and technology adoption are not measured by these search indices.
Common mistakes to avoid
A declining band indicates a lower normalized search index for that term. It does not establish the abandonment or maturity of a technology, or identify who searched for it. Separate activity data would be needed to examine technology usage.
