Concept Maturation Index (Wikipedia)
Stacked pageviews share between four maturing crypto concepts (DeFi, NFT, Web3, Smart Contract) — tracks which conceptual frame is dominating Wikipedia attention across multiple cycles. Articles backfilled from mid-2018 onwards (DeFi and NFT articles created post-2018).
What is it?
Each crypto narrative emerges as a Wikipedia article, peaks as the concept dominates conversation, then plateaus or decays as it's normalized or replaced. This chart stacks daily pageviews of four canonical EN Wikipedia articles selected by global aggregated traffic : Non-fungible token (NFT), Web3, Smart contract, and Decentralized finance (DeFi). It's the most visual way to see narrative cycles : DeFi summer 2020-2021, NFT mania 2021-2022, Web3 wave 2022, Smart contract steady baseline.
How to read
Stacked area : NFT (purple), Web3 (blue), Smart contract (cyan), DeFi (orange). Total height = cumulative daily concept attention (raw pageviews). Slope of each layer tells you which narrative is gaining/losing. NFT layer growing while DeFi shrinks = thematic rotation in retail mind. Steep total decline = entire crypto narrative cooling (typical mid-bear).
Key zones
DeFi dominance phase : Summer 2020 — Spring 2022. NFT dominance phase : Spring 2021 — Spring 2022 (often the tallest layer). Web3 wave : Late 2021 — Mid 2022. Smart contract layer : steady baseline throughout. Floor zone : total < ~5K daily pageviews = bear hibernation, expect cycle bottom indicates from other metrics.
What to observe
Watch for the BIRTH of a new layer (article appearing for the first time with non-zero pageviews) = early narrative formation. Watch the DEATH of a layer (sustained 6+ months below floor) = narrative archived, sectoral capitulation. Cross-rotation (DeFi shrinking + NFT growing) precedes capital rotation by 4-8 weeks.
Historical context
DeFi article pageviews exploded August 2020 (Yield Farming summer) reaching ~30K daily. NFT pageviews exploded March 2021 (Beeple $69M auction) reaching ~80K daily. Web3 became viral December 2021 with Marc Andreessen / Jack Dorsey debate — pageviews hit ~25K. L2 Wikipedia article (Layer 2 scaling) saw sustained growth from 2024 onwards as Base, Arbitrum, Optimism gained traction.
Expert notes
The 4-layer composition (DeFi/NFT/Web3/L2) is a Trinity editorial choice covering the 4 major crypto narratives of cycles 2020-2025. Future cycles may need additions (AI agents, RWA, etc.). Each article's article-ID is sourced from Wikipedia English. Stacking allows visual comparison of relative attention share — what % of crypto-curious mainstream is reading about which concept. Single-day vertical spikes (e.g. NFT article reaching 250K+ pageviews on isolated days vs ~10K baseline) are authentic Wikimedia pageviews counted by the official API — they reflect article virality moments : Wikipedia 'Did You Know?' main-page feature, news flash linking the article, viral tweet, or breaking story making the term suddenly searched. Trinity displays this raw with no smoothing or winsorization to preserve the institutional honesty of attention measurement.
Common mistakes to avoid
Stack height = market cap proxy ❌. Wikipedia attention is NOT linearly correlated to TVL or NFT volume — concepts can be popular conceptually while financially small (Web3 case). Also, stack decline ≠ narrative dead — concepts often plateau as they're normalized (DeFi in 2024 is mature infrastructure, not 'narrative').
