ETF Filings (Bitcoin + Ethereum) (SEC EDGAR)
Two monthly counts of SEC EDGAR filings whose text mentions 'bitcoin ETF' or 'ethereum ETF'. A filing is counted whatever its type; the count does not say whether it approves, rejects or merely mentions a product. Chart starts 2021, when the Ethereum ETF expression begins to appear in the index.
What is it?
This chart plots two monthly counts from the SEC EDGAR full-text index: filings whose text contains 'bitcoin ETF' (orange) and filings whose text contains 'ethereum ETF' (blue). A filing is counted when the expression appears in its text, whatever its type or purpose; the count does not say whether a filing approves, rejects, amends or merely mentions a product. The series starts in 2021, when the Ethereum ETF expression begins to appear in the index (source catalogue).
How to read
Two monthly lines: filings mentioning 'bitcoin ETF' (orange) and filings mentioning 'ethereum ETF' (blue). A point is a count of filings for that month. The two lines are compared level by level and month by month; no filing type, decision or causal order between them is computed. The current month, not yet closed, is left out of the plotted lines; the page states it separately.
Key zones
• The chart sets no regime boundary: each line is read against its own history • The chart starts in 2021: the catalogue sets that start date, when Ethereum ETF filings begin to appear • A point is a monthly count of filings; twice the height means twice as many filings mention the expression in that month • The two lines can cross: the crossing says which expression appears in more filings that month, nothing else
What to observe
• The level of each line and its change from one month to the next • Months where the ETH line rises above the BTC line, read as more filings mentioning 'ethereum ETF' than filings mentioning 'bitcoin ETF' that month • Months where both lines move together • The gap between the two lines, without inferring an approval calendar or a market cycle • The last plotted point, which is the last closed month: the current month is not drawn
Historical context
First Bitcoin ETF application : Winklevoss 2013 (denied 2017, 2018). First Bitcoin futures ETF : ProShares BITO October 2021. Spot Bitcoin ETF approval : 11 issuers January 2024. Spot Ethereum ETF approval : May 2024 (futures) + July 2024 (spot).
Expert notes
The count searches the full text of SEC EDGAR filings and does not separate S-1 prospectuses, amendments, denial letters or 19b-4 rule changes; a filing is counted when its text contains the expression. The aggregate therefore describes how often 'bitcoin ETF' and 'ethereum ETF' appear, not what the Commission decided. EDGAR full-text search coverage starts in 2001.
Common mistakes to avoid
More ETF filings = approval imminent ❌. Many filings are rejections, amendments or non-decision actions, and the count does not separate them. An ETH peak above BTC is not an acceleration of anything: it is a higher monthly count of filings mentioning 'ethereum ETF'. The volume measures how often the expression appears, not approval likelihood.
