Bitcoin SEC Filings Volume (SEC EDGAR)
Monthly count of SEC 10-K/10-Q/8-K filings mentioning 'bitcoin' — the institutional legal-commitment indication.
What is it?
When a publicly-listed corporation, an investment fund, or a regulated institution wants to take any kind of Bitcoin exposure, they MUST file with the SEC. This chart counts monthly filings (10-K annual reports, 10-Q quarterly reports, 8-K material events) that mention the word 'bitcoin' anywhere in their text. Unlike Twitter buzz or media articles, SEC filings are legal commitments — companies can be sued for misleading statements. Filings count is the cleanest institutional commitment indication.
How to read
Single monthly line. Y-axis = filings count (log scale recommended for 15-year history). Rising trend = growing institutional commitment. Spikes correspond to regulatory deadlines + earnings seasons (Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 quarterly cycle).
Key zones
Floor zone (<100 filings/month) : pre-institutional era 2010-2014. Mid zone (100-500/month) : institutional curiosity 2015-2020. High zone (500-2000/month) : institutional adoption phase 2021+. Spike zone (>2500/month) : peak commitment cycle.
What to observe
Watch the slope acceleration (derivative). Slope acceleration = next wave of corporate adoption. Slope flat with rising prices = retail-driven cycle (institutions hesitant). Slope falling with rising prices = late-cycle warning.
Historical context
Pre-2014 : <50 filings/month, mostly OFAC sanctions language. 2014-2017 : growing recognition. 2017 ICO mania caused short spike then dropped. 2020-2021 : structural rise post-MicroStrategy / Tesla treasury moves. 2024 ETF approval triggered a sustained step-change.
Expert notes
SEC EDGAR full-text search has a 2001 lower bound; pre-2001 filings exist but aren't full-text searchable. The 12 query baskets (bitcoin/cryptocurrency/blockchain/stablecoin/tokenization/digital_asset/bitcoin_etf/ethereum_etf/crypto_custody/defi/nft/mining) cover the institutional vocabulary spectrum. This chart is one of the few public-domain institutional indicates available — Trinity's edge is the cross-validation with on-chain + media + retail data.
Common mistakes to avoid
Filing mention = ownership ❌. A 10-K can mention bitcoin in a risk-factors section without the company actually owning any. To gauge ownership, cross-reference with corporate treasury holdings (Macro Intelligence rubric). Filings count measures attention + recognition, not capital deployment.
