Short-Term Treasury Yields (1, 3 and 6 Months)
US Treasury yields at 1, 3 and 6 months, in percent, from FRED (DGS1MO, DGS3MO, DGS6MO). Compare the levels and movements of these three maturities over time.
What is it?
This chart shows US Treasury yields at 1, 3 and 6 months, in percent, supplied by FRED from U.S. Treasury data. The producer loads DGS1MO, DGS3MO and DGS6MO for the three displayed lines. It also collects the 12-month yield (DGS1), stored separately from those lines. The series describe yields for different maturities observed on the same date.
How to read
Each line follows one maturity through time on the same % axis. A higher line means a higher observed yield at that maturity. Compare the 1-, 3- and 6-month levels on the same date, then follow how each changes. These are time series, rather than a curve of future policy decisions.
Key zones
The zero line locates a zero yield. The displayed guides at 2% and 5% locate yield levels only. Their position does not measure the economic effect of monetary policy.
What to observe
Observe increases or decreases at each maturity, crossings between the lines and widening or narrowing gaps. Distinguish a movement shared by all three maturities from a movement concentrated in one line.
Historical context
Use the selected time window to compare earlier and recent observations of the same maturity. Available dates can differ across the FRED series; a missing observation provides no yield for that date.
Expert notes
Maturity is the remaining term of the Treasury security. A 6-month yield observed today is distinct from a policy rate that will apply in six months. This chart does not compute probabilities of policy decisions or a calendar of rate changes.
Common mistakes to avoid
A gap between maturities is a difference in observed yields. It does not establish the timing or size of a future policy change. The three displayed maturities must be compared using the same observation date and unit.
