Supply Maturity Spectrum

High-resolution view of supply aging across 15+ age bands. Reveals subtle shifts in holder behavior invisible in standard HODL Waves.

What is it?

The Supply Maturity Spectrum is a high-resolution version of HODL Waves, with 12 granular age brackets spanning from daily to decade timescales. This granularity allows identifying 'bulges' - abnormal concentrations of coins in specific age brackets - invisible in standard HODL Waves. These concentrations often correspond to buying waves during specific price events, whose maturation can be tracked over time.

How to read

Like HODL Waves, but with particular attention to 'bulges' in the spectrum. A bulge slowly moving toward older brackets represents a group of coins bought together that are maturing without being spent. If a bulge suddenly disappears, those coins have been spent. The stacked area chart shows the same age bands as HODL Waves, normalised as a percentage of total supply.

Key zones

The most significant concentrations are typically found in brackets corresponding to 2-4 weeks after major price events (crashes, ATH). For example, after the March 2020 crash, a massive bulge appeared in the '2-3 weeks' bracket that then migrated to '1-3 months' then '3-6 months' etc.

What to observe

Identify 'conviction waves': groups of buyers holding together through price variations. The longer a bulge remains intact, the stronger that cohort's conviction. Also observe 'holes' in the spectrum - brackets with few coins - indicating periods when few transactions occurred (often in deep bear market).

Historical context

The maturity spectrum revealed that March 2020 crash buyers formed an exceptionally resilient cohort - their 'bulge' traversed the entire 2020-2021 rally without significantly dissipating. Conversely, April 2021 top buyers formed a bulge that quickly fragmented during the May-July 2021 correction, indicating weak conviction.

Expert notes

The Supply Maturity Spectrum is the analytical foundation of the Conviction Migration Map (exclusive metric). To get the most from this view, compare the size and persistence of bulges from one cycle to another - cycles with wider and more persistent bulges in the > 1 year brackets have historically been followed by more durable uptrends.

Common mistakes to avoid

The high resolution can create an illusion of precision. Each 'bulge' is not necessarily a homogeneous cohort of buyers - it may contain a mix of purchases, transfers, and exchange movements. The spectrum is best used to identify macro maturation trends rather than to track individual cohorts with certainty.
