Net Realized PnL (USD)
Net Realized PnL converted to USD via the daily close price, smoothed over 7 days. Provides a magnitude reading institutional desks can size against AUM and inflow context.
What is it?
USD-denominated Net Realized PnL multiplies the daily profit-loss differential (in BTC) by the daily close price. Smoothed over 7 days. The USD version provides a magnitude reading that institutional desks can match against AUM and ETF inflows. It naturally amplifies the balances of high-price phases, making cycle tops particularly visible.
How to read
Read USD magnitude as a proxy for capital in motion: a massively positive USD Net PnL indicates significant wealth converted to realized gains. Conversely, a massively negative USD Net PnL indicates capitulation measured in billions. Zero-line crossings remain significant; absolute USD peaks help rank historical phases against each other.
Key zones
Zero line: regime inflection identical to BTC Net PnL. Extreme positive zones: massive profit-taking markers (potential top). Extreme negative zones: capitulation-in-billions markers (potential bottom). USD magnitudes naturally grow cycle after cycle with market cap inflation - inter-cycle comparisons require normalization by market cap.
What to observe
Cross-reference USD Net PnL with spot ETF flows for post-2024 analyses: institutional ETF buying appears as a structural offset to spot capitulations, which may dampen the negative Net PnL traditionally seen in deep bears. Also watch new USD Net PnL ATHs - every cycle prints one, marking distribution tops.
Historical context
The USD version has printed historical peaks at every major Bitcoin cycle top - magnitudes matching massive redistribution phases between cohorts. The USD version is the most-used by institutional desks because it directly approximates negotiable AUM amounts.
Expert notes
The USD version is sensitive to the current price regime - accurate reading requires normalization by market cap for inter-cycle analysis. For short-term tactical analysis, prefer the USD version; for long-term structural analysis, cross-reference with the BTC version.
Common mistakes to avoid
USD magnitude is not directly comparable across cycles - a $5B Net PnL in 2015 and $5B in 2025 do not mean the same relative intensity. Always normalize by market cap. Also: the USD version is by construction highly correlated with price, hence less informative in divergence analysis.
