Adoption Narrative (GDELT)
Crypto news coverage of sovereign adoption, payments and adoption in general, stacked in three exclusive layers per 100,000 articles (7-day window).
What is it?
This chart stacks three families of adoption articles: sovereign adoption (legal tender, state reserves), payments and commerce, and other adoption articles. The layers are exclusive, in that priority order: an article is counted once, and the total height measures the intensity of adoption coverage. Volumes are per 100,000 articles monitored by GDELT on a sliding 7-day window; the source is the Global Knowledge Graph 2.0, published every fifteen minutes from English-language and translated articles. The history starts in February 2015; a day below 75% of its files is not computed and the periods of incomplete or missing publication (October-November 2020, August 2021, 15 June to 1 July 2025) are absent.
How to read
Three stacked layers. The sovereign layer is event-driven: it stays close to zero most of the time and lights up around state decisions. The payments layer follows news from commerce and service players. The other layer is a slower background made of broader adoption articles. Markers: total median 12.2, 5% of sessions above 34.3. The payments layer has a median of 9.4; the sovereign layer a median of 0.2, with spikes above 100; the other layer a median of 1.2.
Key zones
No fixed zones, but very different regimes across layers. Sovereign adoption: almost nil until 2020, it opens in 2021 (maximum 103 on 2021-06-12) and then returns to more modest levels, with a push to 50 in March 2025 during the US strategic reserve decree. Payments: maximum 132 on 2019-06-24, during the announcement of the Libra project, and annual medians between 2 and 17 depending on the year. Total: the highest 5% of sessions exceed 34, and the absolute record is 139 on 2021-06-12.
What to observe
The three layers do not follow the same clock. The total peaks in June 2021 (139, the month of El Salvador's Bitcoin law) and in June 2019 (133, the month of the Libra announcement), two moments carried by different layers: sovereign in the first case, payments in the second. September 2021, when the Salvadoran law took effect, still carries the sovereign layer to 102. After 2022, the sovereign layer recedes and the total is mostly held up by the payments and other layers. Adoption making headlines is not necessarily adoption taking hold: coverage measures attention, not usage.
Historical context
2015-2017: adoption coverage almost non-existent (annual medians at or near zero). June 2019: the Libra announcement lifts the payments layer to 132 on 2019-06-24 and the total to 133 for the month. June 2021: El Salvador's Bitcoin law pushes sovereign adoption to 103 on 2021-06-12 and the total to 139 for the month. September 2021: the law takes effect, sovereign layer at 102. May 2022, during Terra/Luna: the sovereign layer rises to 14.9 on 2022-05-16, carried by the debate about reserves. March 2025: the US strategic reserve decree lifts the sovereign layer to 50 and the month's total to 59.1.
Expert notes
The priority order places sovereign adoption first: an article that talks about both a state and payments is counted under sovereign. The other layer is broad by construction; volumes are shares per 100,000 articles, not absolute counts. As on the other GDELT charts, the 7-day windows and reliability rules (75% of files, periods of incomplete or missing publication) apply identically.
Common mistakes to avoid
Adoption coverage spike = adoption happening ❌. Coverage tells what the press talks about, not what is used on the ground; a parliamentary debate and a real rollout produce the same spike. The sovereign layer can stay elevated for months after a decision, then recede, without adoption having declined. Cross-check with usage data instead of concluding from the coverage level.
