What is it?
The Builder Momentum Index aggregates GitHub stars velocity (rate of new stars per day) across the 26-repo crypto OSS basket plus Stack Exchange dev tag questions velocity across the 15-tag basket. Each component is Z-score normalized over 5-year rolling window. Positive Z = builder excitement above norm. Trinity Exclusive — no industry equivalent.
How to read
Single oscillator line. Above +1 = builder excitement wave active. Below -1 = builder retreat / consolidation. Crossing zero from negative to positive = builder cycle reactivation (often precedes price cycles by 4-12 weeks).
Key zones
Z > +2 : extreme builder euphoria (rare, late-cycle). Z 0 to +1 : healthy mid-cycle. Z -1 to 0 : builder fatigue / consolidation. Z < -2 : builder capitulation (rare, often near cycle bottoms).
What to observe
BMI leading price by 4-12 weeks is the strongest indication. BMI lagging price = builders late to confirm cycle. BMI divergence (BMI falling, price rising) = late-cycle warning, builders disengaging.
Historical context
BMI peaked Q4 2017 (+2.4), Q4 2021 (+2.1). Bottomed Q4 2018 (-1.9), Q4 2022 (-1.8). Each cycle bottom in BMI preceded BTC bottom by 8-16 weeks. Q1 2024 ETF approval coincided with BMI crossing above zero.
