What is it?

A ranking snapshot of countries by their total Bitcoin holdings - this is a categorical visualization of the latest data point, not a time-series. Each row shows one country with its name, total BTC held, USD value, and a confidence badge (verified on-chain vs estimated). The ranking is refreshed daily as new sovereign movements are tracked, but the chart itself shows where each country stands today rather than how their position evolved over time.

How to read

Each row is a country ranked by total BTC. Columns: rank number, flag, country name, confidence badge (✓ verified on-chain / ~ estimated aggregator), source-type chip (Seized/Purchased/Mined/Donated), total BTC, USD value. Horizontal bar length is proportional to the largest holder (normalized). The KPI row above shows total sovereign BTC, total USD value, and count of countries tracked. Because this is a snapshot, the BTC price overlay and log-scale toggles are unavailable - to study how a country's holdings evolved over time, use the companion charts Total Sovereign BTC, Sovereign BTC by Country, and Government BTC Net Position Change.

Key zones

No zones - this is a categorical ranking visualization, not a numerical scale.

What to observe

Watch for rank changes between visits. New entrants suggest growing sovereign adoption; a country dropping off the list (Germany after mid-2024) reveals strategic divestment. Compare Verified vs Estimated badges to assess data certainty per row.

Historical context

The US has been the largest sovereign BTC holder since seizing Silk Road BTC in 2013, with subsequent additions from the Bitfinex hack recovery (2022) and other criminal-case seizures. The rankings shifted significantly during the German government liquidation episode of mid-2024 (BKA dumped roughly 50,000 BTC over several weeks). El Salvador entered the rankings in September 2021 as the first nation to deliberately purchase BTC under a legal-tender framework. Bhutan's mining-driven holdings became publicly visible in 2024.

Expert notes

Rankings can change rapidly - a single government auction can move a country from top 5 to off the list. The Verified badge means Trinity has confirmed addresses on-chain (US, El Salvador public tracker, Bhutan Druk); the Estimated badge means the figure comes from public aggregators or government statements without direct on-chain verification (China's PlusToken seizure, UK's Jian Wen seizure).

Common mistakes to avoid

Total BTC held does not indicate intent to keep - seizure-based holdings may be liquidated at any time, while purchase-based holdings tend to be more strategic. The Estimated rows are best treated as upper-bound figures: actual sovereign holdings could be lower if aggregator sources have been overcounted. Finally, the leaderboard ranks public sovereign holdings only - covert or unreported government accumulation is by definition invisible.
