What is it?

A time-series view of the largest public companies holding Bitcoin on their balance sheets, ranked by total BTC quantity and tracked over time. The leaderboard surfaces the leading public-company holders, with Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) historically dominating by a wide margin and a growing cohort of corporate accumulators populating the rest of the cohort across the US, Japan and beyond. This chart provides a longitudinal view of which corporations carry the largest exposure to Bitcoin, serving as a proxy for institutional conviction in BTC as a treasury reserve asset.

How to read

Each curve represents a top corporate BTC holder tracked over time. The y-axis shows BTC holdings (compact format), the x-axis the calendar date. Companies are ranked by current BTC quantity, with the dominant holder typically saturating the top of the chart. Hover the tooltip for per-date holdings and contextual P&L where available. The visual concentration of curves at the top of the chart immediately conveys how concentrated corporate holdings remain among the leading entities. Vertical markers annotate structural events (MSTR first purchase Aug 2020, Tesla Feb 2021, Strategy rebranding Feb 2025, 400K/600K BTC milestones) - hover for source link.

Key zones

Key thresholds for institutional analysis: • >100,000 BTC: Mega-holders - historically, only Strategy has crossed this threshold. Any new entrant at this level would be a seismic market event. • 10,000-100,000 BTC: Major holders - names like Twenty One Capital, MetaPlanet, Tesla and Trump Media have populated this tier. These companies individually influence market sentiment when they buy or sell. • 1,000-10,000 BTC: Significant holders - GameStop and a growing cohort of mid-cap companies. This tier expands fastest in bull cycles. • <1,000 BTC: Small allocations - typically 1-5% of treasury. These companies are testing the waters. • The top 10 companies historically concentrate the vast majority of corporate BTC supply.

What to observe

Real-time ranking - which corporations hold the most BTC today. Point-in-time snapshot to identify current top holders and their relative magnitude (Strategy dominates post-2020, Tesla diversified, MicroStrategy historical). Institutional reading: who is exposed in concentration today? Watch rank changes among the top 10 (large purchases or sales), new entrants in the top 20 (copycat behavior in same sectors), the gap between #1 and #2 (narrowing marks a new mega-accumulator), and geographic diversity (US-centric vs global adoption). Distinct from the timeline (multi-month trajectory) and vs-price (smart-money correlation) - leaderboard answers 'who is exposed right now'.

Historical context

Corporate Bitcoin treasury holdings barely existed before August 2020, when Strategy (then MicroStrategy) announced its first purchase of 21,454 BTC at approximately $11,600 per coin. This was the pioneering move that legitimized Bitcoin as a corporate treasury asset. Tesla followed in February 2021 with a major BTC allocation (later partially sold). The trend accelerated in the post-halving wave with MetaPlanet in Japan becoming 'Asia's MicroStrategy,' GameStop announcing a BTC treasury strategy, Trump Media entering the space, and Twenty One Capital launching as a purpose-built BTC holding vehicle. Corporate holdings have grown from a base of zero in 2020 to a multi-hundred-thousand-BTC aggregate position in just a few years.

Expert notes

All holdings data is derived from public corporate disclosures (SEC filings, press releases, annual reports) aggregated by CoinGecko. This is declarative data - companies self-report their holdings, and there is no on-chain verification for most entities because custodian addresses are not publicly known. Update frequency varies: some companies report quarterly (SEC 10-Q/10-K), others announce purchases via press release in real time. Strategy publishes a BTC tracker on its website with near real-time updates. Holdings may be stale by up to 90 days for companies that only report quarterly. ETF holdings (BlackRock, Fidelity, etc.) are excluded - this tracks operating companies only.

Common mistakes to avoid

Holdings data is declarative, not on-chain verified. Companies self-report and there is no way to confirm exact balances for most entities. Do not assume the leaderboard is perfectly real-time - smaller companies may only update quarterly. The BTC count alone does not reflect conviction: a mega-cap company holding 1,000 BTC has a very different risk profile than a mid-cap or small-cap company holding the same quantity (the same BTC position represents a much larger share of the smaller company's balance sheet). Finally, 'holding BTC' does not mean 'holding BTC in self-custody' - most corporate holders use institutional custodians.
