CVD vs Price - Overlay
Cumulative Volume Delta (USD) plotted against BTC price on a dual-axis chart. The institutional reading lives in the divergences: price advancing while CVD declines describes a move not supported by aggressive flow, and the reverse configuration describes absorbed selling.
What is it?
This chart pairs the aggregated Cumulative Volume Delta (in USD, see the companion CVD chart for the construction) with the BTC price (in USD, perpetual reference) on a dual-axis layout. The pairing exists because neither series alone answers the operative question: is the current price move fed by aggressive flow, or is it happening against it? Reading both lines together answers it visually.
How to read
Two lines on separate axes: the CVD (USD, left) and the price (USD, right). Four canonical configurations: price up with CVD up (move fed by aggressive demand), price up with CVD flat or down (bearish divergence: advance without aggressive flow), price down with CVD down (move fed by aggressive supply), price down with CVD flat or up (bullish divergence: selling absorbed). The dual-axis layout preserves the shape of both series without compressing either.
Key zones
This pairing has no numeric zones: the information is configurational. The four price-versus-CVD configurations described in the reading guide are the zones. Persistence is the filter: a divergence maintained over weeks carries structure; a single-day mismatch is noise.
What to observe
Hunt divergences at price extremes: new price highs with a lower CVD high, or new price lows with a higher CVD low, have historically accompanied local exhaustion episodes. Confirm with the liquidation and funding lenses of this rubric before attaching weight to any single configuration. Watch the resolution: divergences describe tension, and the direction in which the pair resolves is itself the information.
Historical context
Reading price against cumulative delta is a classical futures technique that crossed into crypto with the availability of taker-attributed volumes on perpetuals. Past cycles repeatedly showed trending phases where both lines advanced together, punctuated by divergence episodes around local tops and bottoms. The lens complements open interest: OI reads positioning, CVD reads the aggressive flow that moves price.
Expert notes
The price reference is the perpetual close of the leading venue (spot and perp track each other within a tight band on BTC). The CVD leg inherits the construction and window caveats of the companion chart: level not comparable across windows, venues summed where reporting. Divergence analysis is scale-dependent: inspect several timeframes before concluding, as a divergence on one horizon can be invisible on another.
Common mistakes to avoid
A divergence is not a timing device: tension can persist far longer than expected before resolving. This chart describes flow versus price, it does not issue recommendations. Do not treat the CVD axis and the price axis as comparable magnitudes: they are different units on independent scales, and only shapes and turning points should be compared.
