What is it?
The Techno-Economic Phases indicator overlays a public-domain academic framework - originally articulated by economist Carlota Perez in her 2002 book on technological revolutions and financial capital - onto the Bitcoin log price line. The framework partitions any major technological revolution into five sequential phases that unfold over roughly fifty years : Installation (early infrastructure build-out and niche adoption), Frenzy (speculative bubble in the new technology), Crash / Turning Point (the bubble bursts and the market sobers), Synergy (broad productive deployment with mature capital structures), and Maturity (saturation and gradual obsolescence as the next revolution emerges). The chart applies this lens to Bitcoin, anchoring the start of the cycle on the protocol genesis in early 2009 and rendering each phase as a coloured background band (Apple system colours : sky blue, purple, red, green, yellow) that spans the full chart height. Two of the five phases (Synergy and Maturity) are forward-projected with a reduced opacity plus a dashed border to clearly signal their hypothetical status. A vertical "Maintenant" / "Now" marker shows the latest data date so the reader sees instantly which phase Bitcoin currently sits in.
How to read
Read the chart by tracing the Bitcoin log price line (white on dark themes, near-black on light theme) across the five coloured phase bands underneath. Each phase is labelled at the top of its band with the phase name in the phase colour ; phases that are forward-projected (Synergy and Maturity, the two right-most bands) carry a parenthetical "(projected)" suffix and use a reduced opacity plus a dashed border. What to observe
• "Now" marker position across the phase bands : the primary actionable observation. Locate where the vertical "Maintenant" / "Now" line crosses the colored bands to name the current Perez phase directly. This is the chart's single most important read. • BTC log price trajectory shape per phase : the framework predicts a roughly J-shaped curve over the full cycle - flat-ish Installation, parabolic Frenzy, sharp Crash, durable Synergy expansion, plateau Maturity. Compare the actual BTC log line behaviour inside each band against the framework expectation. • Phase transition timing : the dashed vertical markers between phases are framework calibration points. When the actual BTC price trajectory crosses one of these markers, the analyst can note whether the framework's phase timing held or shifted. • Projected phases caveat : the Synergy and Maturity bands are forward-projected with reduced opacity plus dashed borders to remind the reader these are framework hypotheses, not data. The five-phase techno-economic framework was articulated by economist Carlota Perez in her 2002 book published by Edward Elgar, drawing on Joseph Schumpeter's earlier work on long waves of capitalist development. Perez's central observation is that every major technological revolution since the Industrial Revolution has followed a similar five-phase pattern lasting roughly fifty years : canals (anchored 1771), steam (1829), steel (1875), oil/automobile (1908), and information technology (1971). The framework predicts that the cryptocurrency revolution - anchored conventionally at the Bitcoin genesis in January 2009 - should follow the same five-phase arc over approximately the 2009-2060 horizon. The Installation phase covered the protocol's early years, when the technology was being built and adopted by a small technical community.
