Small Holders Supply 30d

Retail cohort below 100 BTC per address, net supply change on 30-day window smoothed SMA7.

What is it?

This metric focuses on the retail cohort (addresses holding under 100 BTC) and decomposes its movement across three sub-cohorts: shrimp (under 1 BTC), crab (1 to 10 BTC), fish (10 to 100 BTC). Supply change is computed on a 30-day window then smoothed by 7-day moving average. The whole enables fine-grained retail behavior analysis.

How to read

The vertical axis is BTC positive or negative. The three sub-cohorts are stacked to visualize their relative contribution to aggregate retail movement. Shrimp expansion suggests diffuse retail adoption; fish expansion suggests retail maturation toward more substantial positions.

Key zones

Simultaneous pushes across all three sub-cohorts into positive territory are the strongest indicator of structural retail adoption. Divergences (shrimp positive, fish negative) often reveal internal rotations within the retail segment.

What to observe

Late bull-run phases are historically marked by a shrimp cohort explosion (late speculative adoption) and fish cohort stagnation or contraction. The inverse pattern characterizes cycle bottoms.

Historical context

Late bull runs in 2017 and 2021 saw a spectacular shrimp cohort peak, confirming massive late retail entry. The 2022-2023 accumulation phase saw fish and crab cohorts continue accumulating despite the bear market, a classic retail-maturation post-cycle indicator.

Expert notes

The retail breakdown offers a finer reading than simple address counting, which can be artificially inflated by splitting techniques (CoinJoin, batch transactions). The BTC-held metric is more robust to topological manipulation.

Common mistakes to avoid

Do not interpret shrimp growth as a short-term bullish indicator: it typically reflects late adoption that often precedes a correction. Fish maturation is a more reliable indicator of structural retail-segment health.
