Bitcoin News Volume (GDELT)
Daily count of news articles mentioning Bitcoin across 100+ global sources — the mainstream media wave gauge.
What is it?
GDELT 2.0 (Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone) is an open-source project monitoring 100+ news sources globally in 65 languages. This chart counts daily articles mentioning 'bitcoin' — the cleanest mainstream-media wave gauge available for free. Unlike Twitter (bot-polluted) or Reddit (echo chamber), GDELT covers professional journalism with NLP-cleaned indication.
How to read
Single line, log scale. Y-axis = daily articles count. Sustained rising trend = mainstream media wave building. Sharp spikes correspond to major events (halvings, ETF approvals, crashes, regulatory news). Baseline rises over years reflect Bitcoin's growing media coverage.
Key zones
2017 baseline : ~1000 articles/day, peaks 5000/day. 2018-2020 bear : 500-2000/day. 2021 bull : 2000-8000/day. 2022 post-FTX : ~5000/day (panic coverage). 2024 ETF : 5000-15000/day (institutional + price rally combined).
What to observe
News volume spiking before price = anticipatory media wave (positive). News volume spiking with price collapse = panic coverage (often near bottom). News volume flat with rising price = retail-only rally (institutions disengaged). Sustained spike for 4+ weeks = late-cycle FOMO + 'sell the news' setup.
Historical context
GDELT data starts 2015 (effectively 2017 for crypto coverage). Major peaks : December 2017 ATH, May 2021 ATH, November 2022 FTX (panic), January 2024 ETF approval. The 2024 ETF wave produced the highest sustained volume in GDELT crypto history.
Expert notes
GDELT 2.0 covers 100+ sources but is dominated by English-language professional press (Bloomberg, Reuters, FT, WSJ, etc.). The volume indication is most accurate for Western institutional / professional media — emerging markets coverage is captured but at lower weight. Combine with Wikipedia multi-language pageviews for global retail attention.
Common mistakes to avoid
Higher news volume = bullish ❌. News volume measures attention intensity, not direction. The November 2022 FTX week had massive negative-toned volume. Always pair volume with sentiment tone (narrative-gdelt-bitcoin-sentiment-tone) for direction.
