DEX — Hyperliquid Whale Tracker
Aggregated view of large positions on the Hyperliquid native API. Tracks size, side and entry levels of the heaviest open positions on the leading on-chain perpetual DEX.
What is it?
Tracking BTC perpetual positions of 20 largest wallets ('whales') active on Hyperliquid DEX, source Hyperliquid native API (api.hyperliquid.xyz/info endpoint clearinghouseState + userState). Hyperliquid being a DEX native platform built on Arbitrum L2, all positions are publicly visible on-chain — contrary to opaque CEX. The Snapshot view displays a ranking table of the 20 whales sorted by descending USD position size: pseudonymous wallet (0x... prefix + suffix), USD position size, side (long/short), leverage. The toggleable Temporal view switches to a multi-line displaying the Top 5 whale position evolution over 30 days daily. Hyperliquid ToS source effective 2025-01-14 explicitly commercial OK. 1h cache. Compliance caveat: pseudonymous wallets only, no individual identification.
How to read
Snapshot view: 20-row ranking table with columns pseudo wallet (prefix + abbreviated suffix), USD position size, side with coloured badge (green for long, red for short), leverage as a multiplier (1x to 50x typical). Temporal view: five lines representing the positions of the top five whales, Y-axis USD position size, X-axis daily time over 30 days. The switch between both views operates via a tab selector with a smooth transition. The enriched hover tooltip displays: wallet + USD position + leverage + approximate entry price + approximate unrealised PnL. The BTC price overlay (right Y-axis, at least three intermediate ticks, toggleable on the Temporal view) enables crossing whale positions with price movement.
Key zones
Hyperliquid being a retail-heavy DEX with high maximum leverage (up to 50x on some pairs), whale positions typically represent the most aggressive traders in the crypto market. A BTC whale position > 10 M$ is notable, > 50 M$ is rare and indicates extreme conviction or a professional market-making strategy. Typical distribution: top 5 whales generally represent 30-50% of total Hyperliquid BTC OI. Concentration > 70% on top 5 is abnormal (potential cascade risk if a whale liquidates). Observed leverages typically vary between 2x and 20x — leverage > 30x on position > 10 M$ indicates a very aggressive trader (often volatile, to watch for potential liquidation).
What to observe
Performance trader alpha patterns: (1) concordant long or short accumulation on Top 5 whales over 7-14 days — DEX-native smart money indication anticipating a move, to cross-reference with CEX retail L/S ratio (#13) often opposite; (2) > 50% rotation of Top 5 positions in 7 days — user-configurable Performance Discord/email alert, indication of major DEX institutional shift; (3) whale accumulation opposite to CEX retail crowd — historically very profitable configuration (bullish DEX whale + max long CEX retail = retail trap probable pre-correction); (4) Top 5 whales sustained average leverage > 20x — indication of leverage-overloaded market, watch for potential cascade; (5) appearance of new whale > 10 M$ not seen before — entry indication of new smart money actor, to investigate.
Historical context
Documented Hyperliquid evolution: November 2024 Hyperliquid TGE (HYPE native token launch, first whales establish rapidly, platform OI goes from tens of millions to several billions in weeks), December 2024 exponential expansion (DEX-native whales push Hyperliquid OI toward perpetual BTC global Top 5), post-TGE maturation phase (appearance of professional market-making strategies on Hyperliquid, whale profile becomes more diversified vs initially purely degen retail), gradual institutionalisation phase (some professional funds start using Hyperliquid for its competitive leverage and DEX-native non-custodial settlement). The whale tracking pattern on Hyperliquid does not yet have very long history (post-TGE only) but indicates observed since launch are remarkably correlated with BTC movement.
Expert notes
The Hyperliquid Whale Tracker is one of Trinity Insights' most distinctive innovations — the DEX total on-chain visibility advantage vs opaque CEX enables literally tracking the most active traders in the crypto market. For exhaustive cross-layer Trinity reading, systematically cross-reference with: (1) TLSR Trinity Long/Short Regime (Layer B offshore CEX perpetual signed log-ratio composite) — DEX whales vs CEX retail crowd comparison, classic smart money vs retail divergence; (2) Exchange Reserves on-chain (Macro Intelligence) — CEX outflows may correspond to DEX inflows narrative. This Performance tier metric carries user-configurable Discord/email alert: rotation threshold > 50% Top 5 positions over 7 days triggers notification. Fundamental compliance caveat: pseudonymous wallets, no individual identification (privacy preservation). Multi-DEX aggregated coverage (dYdX, GMX, Vertex, Drift, etc.) scheduled V1.1.
Common mistakes to avoid
Common mistake: assuming a single whale always indicates smart money. NO — on retail-heavy Hyperliquid DEX, many whales are very aggressive traders leverage 20-50x who can get liquidated rapidly (indication noise, not alpha). Always cross-reference with position persistence (3+ weeks minimum) and Top 5 concordance (collective vs isolated indication). Another trap: attempting to identify the owner of a pseudonymous wallet. FORBIDDEN — Trinity Insights provides no identification service, this is a privacy and potentially regulatory violation. Wallets are strictly pseudonymous. Finally, don't forget Hyperliquid is only one DEX among several (dYdX, GMX, Vertex, Drift, etc.) — multi-DEX aggregated coverage scheduled V1.1.
